1914–2012

Massachusetts connection
Aquinnah / Noepe
Widdiss was an Aquinnah Wampanoag leader, historian, and clay artist. She helped lead the long effort to gain federal recognition for her Tribe. Recognition came in 1987 during her presidency. Many citizens and leaders worked together; the Tribe’s history began thousands of years before that decision.
