Mapmaker’s workshop
Choose places to build a route. Measure straight-line distances, then explain what a real journey would need.
North is up. Outlines use the site’s Census and Natural Earth geographic data. Pins mark approximate place centers. Connecting lines show straight-line comparisons, not ferry routes, roads, boundaries, or permission to cross land.
How is the distance calculated?
The tool uses latitude and longitude with a spherical-Earth distance formula. Distances are rounded to one decimal kilometer. A real journey may be longer because it follows roads, navigable water, and available services. This is a classroom estimate, not a navigation tool.
