Massachusetts connection
Recruited in Massachusetts; trained at Readville
This Civil War regiment had Black enlisted soldiers and white officers. Its soldiers fought for the Union and challenged unequal pay. Their service helped confront racist claims about Black Americans. The memorial across from the Massachusetts State House remembers the regiment and its colonel, Robert Gould Shaw.
