Herman Melville
1819–1891

Massachusetts connection
Pittsfield and New Bedford
Melville completed Moby-Dick while living at Arrowhead in Pittsfield. His experiences at sea helped shape his writing. A view of Mount Greylock also inspired him. His work connects inland Massachusetts with the whaling ports and ocean journeys that were part of the state’s economy.
